New Year, New Change

2016 is over and 2017 has begun! With the New Year comes New Year’s resolutions. But how many of us decide to make a new year’s resolution, only to give up on it not too long after? If you have made a resolution in the past, and have kept it, way to go! It’s a good quality to be a finisher. But if you’re looking to make some changes this year, let me encourage you to look at the inside of your heart rather than just adjusting changes on the outside.

Many of us are looking to lose weight, change our diet, change spending habits, save money, exc. Those changes are all great and are necessary to make. But let me ask you- are these REALLY the most important changes to make in your life? As we spend a lifetime adjusting certain things to make us more comfortable and secure (whether we are trying to find that security with ourselves or the added accessories to our life) many people are walking in darkness. That darkness could be control, fear, an addiction, grief, depression, anxiety, worry, anger, hatred, un-forgiveness, bitterness, and the list goes on. As we spend our entire existence trying to gather ourselves on the outside to make it LOOK like we have it all together, on the inside we are slowly withering away.

My challenge for you in 2017 is this: identify was is holding you captive, and make a decision to seek freedom and healing. True fulfilling life begins when you make a decision to step away from your past, and seek change for the future.

But, we cannot do this on our own. The healing every one of us needs isn’t just from the offense that happened to us last weekend. It comes from years of hurt, abuse, shame, guilt, and insecurities. No doctor can diagnosed the emotional pain you have carried for years. No amount of drugs can heal you from a broken heart. The only one who can set your soul free is the One who came and died so you can have new life.

Jesus is the answer.

We have a Creator who knows the details of every person’s life. He knows you. He knows your past, present and future. He knows the mistakes and injustice done to you yesterday, and he knows your tomorrow. But He doesn’t know us just to have knowledge. He knows us to show us where we need healing, and what we need to overcome in our life.

I have experienced this in my own life. By the power of Gods spirit and His word, God has shown me the areas I needed healing in. When those years of pain and hurt were brought to the surface, and they were identified, I was able to bring them to the Lord and surrender my baggage to Him. Was that an easy thing to do? No, not at all. But, it was worth it. The recovery process from my hurt is something I would never go back and change, despite the fact it was very hard. I have found freedom, and I wouldn’t trade that freedom for anything.

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit." 2 Corinthians 3:17,18

God wants to transform, change, and transfigure us while we are on this earth. That is the point: to accept Christ into our hearts and then allow Him to change us to look more like Him.

Transformation means: a thorough or dramatic change in form or appearance.

And, Get this: the word transfigure (which is a synonym of transform) means transform into something more beautiful or elevated.

THAT is what God wants to do in your life. He wants to make beauty from ashes. He wants to change you so you live for what is beautiful, good, holy, and pure. Freedom is continued to be had when you live THIS kind of life.

God is good in all He does. If He asks you to surrender a bad habit or addiction, it’s because He wants to set you free. If He wants you to forgive someone, it’s for freedom. He wants to take your hurt and heal it. He wants to take your pain and give you purpose. Let Him have your way in your heart. Jesus already made a way so you can be free. Don’t rob yourself from experiencing a life that has already been purchased for you.

Start 2017 with making changes in your heart. Run hard after God and allow Him to use you for a great purpose in 2017 and beyond.

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is upon me,
for the Lord has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted
and to proclaim that captives will be released
    and prisoners will be freed.
2 He has sent me to tell those who mourn
that the time of the Lord’s favor has come,
and with it, the day of God’s anger against their enemies.
3 To all who mourn in Israel
he will give a crown of beauty for ashes,
a joyous blessing instead of mourning,
    festive praise instead of despair.
In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks
that the Lord has planted for his own glory.”
Isaiah 61:1-3
