If we want to be intentional in God’s presence, living and walking in a life of freedom and purpose, then we must develop discernment. What does this mean, exactly?
It means we need to be able to recognize God’s voice from the enemies’ voice. We need to be able to discern what truth is and what a lie is.
One step we need to take to help us develop discernment is this- we need to be sold on the fact that the bible is 100% truth. If you are doubting this, then there will be an open door for doubt and disbelief in God’s word and His ways. There is much in the bible that we may not understand. There are stories in the bible that will leave us questioning and wondering. Despite the questions that do come up, are you still willing to have faith and believe that this is God’s word? That the bible is a supernatural book? That it was completely inspired by God?
Many people believe the bible is full of fantasies and fairy tales. Some believe it was written by man to dominate and control. But, when you look at the facts of how this book came together, it points to Someone greater than just mere men.
The bible is a compilation of 66 separate books. There are multiple authors of different backgrounds, cultures, languages, and ethnicity. There are prophesies that have been written in the Old Testament, and then have been fulfilled hundreds of years later in the New Testament. When you look at the bible in its entirety and you begin to study the depths of how it came together (along with archaeological and historical evidence) there is much evidence that points to this fact: The bible is indeed the word of God.
Are you confident of this bold statement? That the bible is from God Himself?
It’s quite extraordinary that we believe this truth. Christians often treat it in a nonchalant way. But if we truly believe that this book is from God Himself, wouldn’t you think we would be indulging ourselves in it every single day? Wouldn’t you think we would never get enough and we would be obsessed with studying, reading, and meditating on the word?
That’s challenging to think about…
With that said, if you truly believe in your heart that the bible is God’s prefect word, then you will be able to stand on the truth and use this tool to fight the lies of the enemy.
As believers, this is our ultimate battle: knowing in our mind and believing in our heart the truth from the lies so we can follow Jesus and be an effective disciple.
John 8:31 says, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
If you’re not living in genuine freedom and purpose that’s cultivated from your inner being, then there may be a lie you’re believing (about yourself, God, past, present, or future).
So, how do we develop discernment and recognize lies?
We need to know the word. We need to know what God says about us. We need to read and study the bible, alone and with others. We need to be in a bible preaching church that unapologetically teaches the word of God without being afraid of offending us. We need biblical counseling. We need small groups. We need to find at least one person we can be accountable to. We need to be humble and honest- with ourselves and God.
We need to test everything and ask ourselves if the teachings we’re listening to are feeding into my fleshy desires, or are they pointing me to Christ?
No matter how painful, no matter how vulnerable we may feel, no matter how we’re exposed… we have to let the word of God speak to our hearts. We need to let God do the work within us so we can be all He wants us to be.
In everything we do, we need to pursue Christ and His heart above everything else. If we pursue our dreams, visions, promises, health, wealth, prosperity… if we pursue anything before Jesus and knowing who He is, we can be lied to and led into deception. Sure, God gives us desires from His heart, but they will come to pass once we delight in Him first (Psalm 34:7).
Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. If Jesus is truth, then follow Jesus and His heart above all else, and you will always be led to truth. Where Jesus is, there is truth. Where truth is, there is freedom. Where freedom is, there is room for us to become all we are designed to be. Thru the power of His Spirit and the word of God, He will equip us to have discernment so we can live in true freedom and purpose.
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
